Project Background – Mining Facility Guardrail Project
Galvanized Guardrails, Crossover Stairs & Catwalks for a Colorado Mining Facility
FCP partnered with Arnold Machinery Company (AMC) on a custom Mining Facility Guardrail Project in Rico, Colorado, providing galvanized steel guardrails for the facility’s mining processing area.
Designed around the customer’s engineered drawings, the guardrails were fabricated in FCP’s California manufacturing facility and delivered to the client’s job site in Colorado. The guardrails provided safety around the facility’s process equipment and open areas. The guardrails also served another important purpose—helping prevent local wildlife from accidentally falling into the open process basins and troughs.
With a tight project deadline and little room for dimensional error, close coordination between AMC, FCP, and the customer was essential. FCP completed the project within the required timeframe, delivering a precision-fabricated system that fit as intended and provided the durability and finished appearance expected for a demanding outdoor mining environment.

The Challenge: Safe Access Around a Mining Operation
Mining and industrial facilities often contain process equipment, open basins, piping, elevation changes, and restricted areas that require carefully planned access and protective barriers.
For this Mining Facility Guardrail Project, the customer needed a custom galvanized steel system that would provide safety around the mining operation. Guardrails were required around exposed areas. The guardrails had an additional purpose unique to the facility’s mountain environment. Along with providing protective barriers for personnel, the system was designed to help prevent local wildlife from accidentally entering or falling into the open process areas.
Dimensional accuracy was critical. The fabricated steel components had to interface with the customer’s existing structures and equipment based on supplied engineered drawings. Adding to the complexity, the customer was working under a tight deadline.
The Solution: Custom Engineered Galvanized Guardrails
Working from the customer’s engineered drawings, FCP manufactured an integrated system incorporating galvanized guardrails. Rather than approaching the project as a collection of unrelated steel components, the system was fabricated to work with the client’s existing steel structures.
Galvanized Steel Guardrails
Custom steel guardrails created protective barriers around the process areas and perimeter surfaces.
The guardrail system helped define designated access areas for personnel while also providing a physical barrier intended to help prevent wildlife from accidentally entering the open process areas.
The galvanized finish provides corrosion protection for the steel, an important consideration for a system exposed to the outdoor conditions of the Colorado mountains.
Precision Fabrication That Fit in the Field
A custom steel system can look right on a drawing, but one of the true measures of successful fabrication is what happens when the finished components arrive at the project site. FCP manufactured the guardrails from the customer’s engineered drawings, requiring them to interface correctly when delivered to the mining facility.
According to Arnold Machinery Company’s Jon Danos, FCP delivered a finished product that “actually fit, and is cosmetically appealing.”
Accurate fabrication can help minimize field modifications, installation complications, and unnecessary delays—especially important when a project is already operating against a demanding schedule.
Galvanized Steel for Colorado’s Outdoor Environment
The project’s location created another important consideration: long-term exposure to the elements. Rico sits in the Colorado mountains, making outdoor steel components subject to changing temperatures, precipitation, snow, and moisture. Galvanizing provides a protective zinc coating that helps protect fabricated steel against corrosion and extend its service life in outdoor environments.
For this project, the galvanized finish provided corrosion protection while also giving the guardrails a consistent, professional appearance. The result was a guardrail system designed around both the facility’s operational requirements and the demanding environment in which it would be used.
Meeting a Tight Mining Project Schedule
Technical complexity wasn’t the only challenge. The customer needed the Mining Facility Guardrail Project completed within a tight timeframe.
According to AMC, FCP accommodated the required schedule and met the deadline without issue. Close communication among FCP, Arnold Machinery Company, and the customer helped keep the detailed project coordinated through fabrication and delivery.
The result was a functioning turnkey solution delivered on the schedule the customer needed.
